Homebush State School is located within the bounds of Mackay Regional Council. The original school structure was built in 1889 to serve a sugar growing community. More recently there is an increasing percentage of parents undertaking mining work as well as families moving out of Mackay to enjoy the lifestyle that rural acreage offers. The nearest city is Mackay, which is approximately 25 kilometres from the school.
The school has expansive grounds shaded by mature trees and is surrounded by cane fields. The original timber school is now the administration and library. A large double classroom space houses the infant's class and the older students work from two modern single teaching spaces. A well-appointed technology lab is shared by all grades and a multi-purpose double teaching space is used flexibly for a variety of purposes
Homebush State School has an active Parents and Citizens' Association that has contributed enormously to the education of Homebush State School students.
